Both vessels Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Isla Mujeres, Mexico on the 20th of March.

A large-scale search and recovery effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean region for two missing sailboats carrying relief goods en route from Mexico to Havana.

Military Search Operations Initiated

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of nine total crew members, according to a official statement.

The ships had been expected to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.

Background of Aid to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the nation endures multiple power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate safety systems and emergency beacons," an official for the convoy said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and officially received another boat that had carried a significant amount of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.

Broader International Backdrop

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgical procedures called off in Cuba due to power shortages.

Diplomatic measures have intensified over the past months, with remarks from different leaders highlighting the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

Responding to previous statements, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to find the boats and secure the well-being of the crews.

To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
