Those $150m Men Transforming a Highlight Machine
The NBA campaign starts now, marking the first time in a ten years that Aussie two biggest hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are without a roster spot.
Their absence indicates a changing of the guard, as Australian guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as essential players for contending teams, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of the country's highest athletic income generators.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are expected to play for playing time around the league, ranging from experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
After lengthy discussions with the Bulls, the guard ultimately inked his rookie extension worth $100m (A$153 million) over four years last month. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is affordable for his role and reputation as a primary ball-handler. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the young star enters this year with much to prove.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the start of last season, Giddey watched as his old team stormed to the title in his absence. As the Bulls look to make the playoffs in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will have to show his scoring and defensive skills are starter-worthy or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
Daniels signed the identical contract as his counterpart recently, and after his MIP honor last year, the Atlanta player's trajectory has skyrocketed in the city following his departure from the New Orleans. He is now praised as one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, and led the league in steals with 3.0 spg – over one whole takeaway per game higher than the tally of second place.
Playing next to dynamic Trae Young in Atlanta, the youngster can be effective this campaign as a secondary ballhandler and defensive stopper as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his three-point shooting, which was subpar last season, and keep enhance his distribution and driving, he could become one of the league’s most well-rounded players.
Johnny Furphy A Dunking Sensation
Indiana wing Furphy has burst onto the scene as a fan favourite in the state following a series of highlight-reel dunks in exhibition games. His athletic displays prompted NBA personality Pat Beverley to describe him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the mid-season slam dunk competition could be on the table.
After playing just eight minutes per game over 50 appearances in his rookie campaign, the former college player is in contention for a Pacers rotation that might favor youth following injury to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor A Long-Range Threat
Guard Proctor fell in the June draft all the way to the second round, where playoff hopefuls Cleveland picked him. The Cavs are front-runners to make the NBA finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be rare for a first-year player taken in the late picks to see significant court time. But the Sydney product has seen time in exhibition play, and his pro-level shooting offers him a opportunity to contribute.
Playing Time Squeeze Ahead for Experienced Group
Veteran big man Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting five position in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will be out for the start of the campaign after ankle surgery.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play regular minutes if the team become competitive. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is expected to be used as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's off-season shoulder procedure has resulted in him with no return date to come back. The player still has a deal for next season, but won’t want to allow his colleagues at the rebuilding Charlotte too much head start. And a physical issue has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has been absent for important exhibition chances in the Mavericks.
Australian NBA Players Fighting for Roles
Then there are those who are unlikely to see much, if any, court time this year. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but seems to be little more than a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards in check.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by the Wolves through their affiliate team. Fellow first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the experienced Luke Travers will be aiming to earn minutes alongside his compatriot for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Mills was planning to end his career, he addressed it with a workout video shared on his social media over the weekend, showing the veteran is still in form and focused on landing one more NBA contract.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an break in his homeland, going fishing and playing with a Sherrin. Even though he took to Instagram last month to deny rumors he was done, the 29-year-old – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to return to the league.
