This production, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed version promoted by official channels that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a made-to-measure version of Putin. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows beyond what he shows.

One recent example is a television show launched last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from chaos. While he is called a different name, the implication is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. A new film based on a popular book aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, these events took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The presidency was effectively a selection process with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country de facto.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• Per a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate simply fitted the necessary criteria: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.

Experts agree that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his clandestine activities in Dresden fall apart under examination. In essence, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not involved with actual agent work.

Interestingly, the move to framing him as a “007” may in part have been inspired by the actor's arrival as 007. The grittier version led Russian media and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his surfaced on city centers, fueling the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. His influence is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it might seek to examine.
