New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
