Israelis have come together around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, amid differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Key Points in Talks

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • Post-war governance of the region

Public Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No location feels like home any longer and until each abducted person are released none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the families of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around the majority of the population want the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of the gathering, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area said another two fatalities had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south region, health workers stated.

The territory's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
