Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
