Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Backlash
Personalities from across the political aisle and the entertainment world are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Update and Detention
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his political party to justify the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of a different political figure.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
