Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined acronym surfaced a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to doctors including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these accusations, just as it denies all charges it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
