British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
